General Information

The Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a four-year course (full time equivalent), and is available on both a full time and part time basis.

The course provides initial teacher education for people who wish to work in secondary years (Years 7-12) school classroom settings, with a Humanities focus. It contains four strands: Christian Studies, Education Studies, Discipline Studies (including Discipline Content and Curriculum and Pedagogy) and Professional Experiences.

Students in the course complete a major of 8 units in a Humanities field and a minor of 4 units in a second area.

The maximum time allowed for the completion of the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is 10 years. Extensions beyond this time may be approved where extenuating circumstances exist.

Subject Prerequisites

From 2020, applicants are required to have at least a sound achievement in one QCAA General Subject in each category (or an equivalent subject from another jurisdiction):

  • English – English, English as an Additional Language (EAL), Literature, English & Literature Extension
  • Maths – General Mathematics, Mathematical Methods, Specialist Mathematics

It is assumed that students will have completed four (4) semesters of study in each of English and Mathematics.

English Language Proficiency Requirements

English language proficiency requirements apply to all domestic and overseas applicants for whom English is not their first language.

      • The minimum English language proficiency requirements for entry to the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) are as follows:A minimum overall band score of 7.5 in IELTS (Academic) with a score of at least 8.0 for Listening and Speaking and a score of at least 7.0 for Reading and Writing;


      • A score of at least 4 in each of the areas of Speaking, Listening, Reading and Writing in the ISLPR. The ISLPR test will only be accepted if it has been administered by ISLPR Language Services, Mt Gravatt, Queensland.
      • English test results must be no more than two years old.
      • The English language proficiency requirements as stated above will apply to all domestic and overseas applicants who do not have English as a first language with the exception of those students who are admitted via the following English admission pathway:
      • Satisfactory completion within the past five years (from Canada [excluding Quebec], New Zealand, Australia, Republic of Ireland, United States or United Kingdom) of senior secondary or accredited higher education sector studies of at least two years (full-time equivalent).

The Queensland College of Teachers requires graduating teachers to have evidence of English language requirements as stated above to demonstrate their English language proficiency prior to registration.

Personal Suitability Requirements

Key competencies for teaching

Applicants to initial teacher education courses must demonstrate that they possess key competencies that have been identified by the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership (AITSL) as those attributes and motivations that are common to effective teachers. To do this, applicants must complete an online questionnaire and to provide a personal statement that addresses two categories.

The online questionnaire allows you to demonstrate your motivation for, and understanding of, the course you are applying for and the teaching profession. You will be asked to rank a series of potentially appropriate statement responses, in order of what you think is most to least important.

For the personal statement, you are to address the following categories by writing two statements of 300-500 words for each category.

Category 1: Interest in Teaching and Children/Young People

  • Write about your motivation and suitability for teaching, such as:Who or what has inspired you to become a teacher? Why is teaching a good career choice? Why are you interested in teaching children/young people? What subjects are you interested in teaching and why? What does being a good teacher mean? What skills and abilities do you have that will make you a good teacher?

Category 2: Involvement in Personal Learning and Leadership Activities

  • Write about your involvement in learning and/or leadership activities that demonstrate capabilities such as: Willingness to learn, Conscientiousness, Resilience, Interpersonal and communication skills, and Organisation and planning skills.

Students choose eight units from one Humanities field as their major teaching area and four units from another field as their minor teaching area. The major teaching area will consist of a minimum of three introductory (100-level) units and a maximum of five advanced (200- and 300- level) units, of which one unit must be a 300-level. The minor teaching area will consist of a minimum of two introductory (100-level) units and a maximum of two advanced (200- and 300- level) units, of which one unit must be a 300-level.

Teaching areas are offered for the following subjects: Accounting (minor only) Biblical Studies, Business Education (minor only) Drama, English, Health and Physical Education (minor only) History, Mathematics (minor only)

Students wishing to undertake studies in another teaching area may be permitted to import studies from other higher education providers and will need to discuss cross-institutional enrolment with the Preservice Education Course Coordinator.

Professional Experience Program

The Professional Experience Program (PEP) in the Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) is a school-based program that provides for the number of days of supervised experience required by the Queensland College of Teachers (QCT) for registration.

The Professional Experience Program consists of 80 days of practicum and 30+ days of internship, as follows:

                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                • four PEP blocks, each of four weeks in duration, with a full day orientation prior to the block; and
                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                                • one internship block, of at least six weeks, with a full day orientation prior to the internship.

Students undertake their Professional Experience Program placements in a range of schools with which CHC has established partnerships over many years. These are predominantly Christian schools in south-east Queensland.

Students are required to hold a valid Blue Card in order to engage in the Professional Experience Program.
