Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts
Humans are rational creatures; we were created to reason about what, how and why things are. The ability to reason well is a crucial skill in any realm, but especially for education, faith, relationships and work. Socrates argued that the unexamined life is not worth living. The Millis Institute seeks to help university graduates and professionals in Australia pursue the examined life in their institutions, organisations, communities and careers.
Toward this end, the Graduate Certificate in the Liberal Arts engage students in subjects like logic, music, history, astronomy and philosophy. Such disciplines not only help students to explore different aspects and orders of Creation, but they train certain modes of reasoning and knowing.
Knowing goes far beyond merely possessing information. From a Christian worldview perspective, it is a more relational, holistic venture, involving different human dimensions and capacities. The liberal arts provide training in knowing mathematically, historically, musically, scientifically, poetically, propositionally, philosophically and theologically. The ability to see the world from these various angles – that is, to deepen lateral thinking and integrate modes of reasoning – would benefit professionals in many fields. Acquiring these skills would be especially attractive to teachers desiring to expand and deepen ways of knowing in their classrooms.
Moreover, these postgraduate courses in the liberal arts help address a desire among Christian professionals for deeper knowledge and skills in writing, speaking, and engaging today’s culture, as well as relating a biblical worldview to their work.

The Graduate Certificate in Liberal Arts is:
- accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and appears in the list of accredited CHC courses on the National Register of Higher Education Providers.
- approved for offering to overseas students and appears on the Commonwealth Register of Institutions and Courses for Overseas Students (CRICOS).
- approved for FEE-HELP, Youth Allowance/Abstudy and Austudy (personal eligibility requirements apply).
A multidisciplinary liberal arts education provides flexibility in the job market. By cultivating transferable skills—like critical thinking, effective communication, managing complexity, creative problem-solving, synthesising data into arguments—the liberal arts equip students to pursue a broad range of careers. Some of the most common are teaching, journalism, law, public policy, business, history, international relations, marketing, ministry, philosophy, social science, and academia.
Whereas a specialised degree trains people for their first job, a liberal arts degree enables them to move into a second, third, or fourth job more easily.
Employers also recognise the importance of hiring workers with sound reasoning, analytical and communication skills. Global leaders like Apple™ and Google™ have been intentional about hiring liberal arts graduates.

English Language Proficiency Requirements
Applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide certified documentary evidence that their secondary schooling, or tertiary studies of at least one year, was conducted in the English language or they have satisfactory results in an acceptable English Language Proficiency examination (see table below). Results are to be no more than two years old as at the commencement of the course of study.

The Graduate Certificate in the Liberal Arts consists of 1 core unit and 3 elective units.
