Overseas HELP Debt – Important Information

There is a new law to recover HELP debts from Aussies who are overseas – this includes both new and old HELP debts. The change means that from 1 July 2017 if you are overseas for six months or more (including if you are travelling, studying or working), you will have the same HELP repayment obligations as people living in Australia.

In the meantime, you can keep on top of your HELP debt and view your HELP account balance online via the ATO’s online services using a myGov account. Then, from 1 July 2017, you will be required to lodge your worldwide income assessment to the ATO through ATO’s online services. Find out how to create a myGov account and link to the ATO on the ATO’s webpage Overseas repayments.
