Bachelor of Human Services – On Campus and External/Online

Course Details Bachelor of Human Services

The Bachelor of Human Services is a three-year course, available both full time and part time. The Bachelor offers an employment pathway into contemporary human services contexts. It engages meaningfully with important questions of human experience and develops graduates who are well-equipped to improve society through effective people-helping practice. The course emphasises both theory and hands-on experience and develops essential skills in working with diverse groups of people in managing the issues they face in modern society.

The Bachelor of Human Services offers three specialisations: Family Support and Child Protection, Human Behaviour, and Youth Work. Students undertake either a practicum stream or a coursework stream within their chosen specialisation.

Students who successfully complete the Diploma of Social Science may articulate to the Bachelor of Human Services. Students who are enrolled in the Bachelor of Human Services may exit with the Diploma of Social Science, subject to the completion of course rules.

Career Outcomes

Students will be able to work generally as caseworkers, group facilitators, group workers, planning officers, support workers or carers. Depending on specialisation they may also work in chaplaincy; community aid and development; community mental health; disability and aged care; family support and child protection; human behaviour; and youth work.

Admissions Criteria

Recent Secondary Education

Applicants who have completed secondary education in the last two years and who are aged 17 years or over, are eligible for admission to this course.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study of at least a completed Certificate III (with a GPA of at least 4.0, where applicable) and who are aged 17 years or over, are eligible for admission to this course.

Higher Education study

Applicants with completed higher education study, and applicants with higher education study of at least one semester (full-time equivalent) who wish to transfer to or within CHC, are eligible for admission to this course.

Work and life experience

Applicants with work and life experience who demonstrate readiness for higher education, including successful completion of the Special Tertiary Admission Test (STAT), are eligible for admission to this course.

English language proficiency

Applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide certified documentary evidence that their secondary schooling, or tertiary studies of at least one year, was conducted in the English language or they have satisfactory results in an acceptable English Language Proficiency examination (see table below). Results are to be no more than two years old as at the commencement of the course of study.

What to expect

The Bachelor of Human Services is a practical, people-focused degree that equips you to work with individuals, families, and communities in need. In the practicum stream, you'll take part in placements during your second and third years, giving you valuable real-world experience, confidence, and professional connections. You’ll apply what you’ve learned in the classroom to real-life settings, building the skills that employers look for. For those seeking a broader perspective, CHC also offers the opportunity to complete an overseas placement, providing global insight into human services practice and training you to respond with compassion, cultural awareness, and professional excellence.

The Bachelor of Human Services consists of 24 units:

The Bachelor of Human Services consists of 24 units – 16 core units and 8 specialisation units. The core units consist of 2 Christian Studies units and 14 Professional Studies units, while the specialisation units consist of 4 discipline-specific units and 4 CPS in either a practicum stream or a coursework stream.In planning their courses, students must consult the Social Sciences Courses Guide for information regarding course rules and requirements, including unit prerequisite requirements.
