The Graduate Certificate in Relationship Counselling is a one year course and is available on a part time basis. This postgraduate short course provides a next level focus on the necessary skills involved in relationship counselling. With only four units, the Graduate Certificate in Relationship Counselling has been developed with an emphasis on understanding the human person of both the client and the counsellor. This courses can feed into the Master of Counselling and offers a specialisation in child and adolescent counselling. Upon completion of this course graduates will be able to provide evidence they have:

• Attained knowledge of the theory, skills and processes related to child and adolescent counselling.

• Critically evaluated theories, principles and concepts of child and adolescent counselling.

• Developed child and adolescent counselling skills.

• Critically reflected on theory, personal perspectives and professional practice in child and adolescent counselling.

• Integrated Christian worldview perspectives, ethical and cultural considerations, research evidence and professional competencies by means of critical thinking and judgment in child and adolescent counselling contexts.

• Constructed logical, coherent and reasoned arguments that clearly and appropriately communicate specific counselling knowledge and ideas.

Admissions Criteria

Recent Secondary Education

Applicants who have recently completed secondary education are not eligible for entry to this course. You will require a completed Bachelor level qualification.

Vocational Education and Training (VET) study

Applicants with vocational education and training (VET) study are not eligible for admission to this course.

Higher Education study

Applicants with a Bachelor or higher degree in a relevant people-helping field are eligible for admission to this course.

Work and life experience

Applicants with work and life experience are not eligible for admission to this course.

English language proficiency

Applicants for whom English is not their first language must provide certified documentary evidence that their secondary schooling, or tertiary studies of at least one year, was conducted in the English language or they have satisfactory results in an acceptable English Language Proficiency examination (see table below). Results are to be no more than two years old as at the commencement of the course of study.

The Graduate Certificate in Relationship Counselling consists of 4 core units:

The Graduate Certificate in Relationship Counselling would consist of four units of study totalling 40cps. It is designed to enhance students’ knowledge and skills in relationship counselling.

Students in the Graduate Certificate in Relationship Counselling must complete all of the units listed. A standard unit carrying a weighting of 10 credit points has an EFTSL value of 0.125 and a semester workload of 150 hours. This includes element such as scheduled contact time, personal study, and preparation of assessment tasks. Unit outlines include a breakdown of these elements as they apply to each unit.

The standard part-time workload for the course is two units, or 20 credit points, over two semesters, totalling 40 credit points.
